What is Fluconazole?

Fluconazole is an antifungal medicine that can be used to treat a variety of fungal infections. It is commonly used to treat:

  • thrush occurring in both men and women
  • fungal balanitis (skin inflammation on the head of the penis)
  • fungal skin infections like athlete’s foot

It can also be used to prevent fungal infections in people with a compromised immune system and treat rare infections of the lungs and brain caused by a fungus called Cryptococcus.

How does it work?

Fluconazole is from a group of antifungal medicines known as triazoles. It works to treat infections by slowing down the growth of the fungus that’s causing problems.

For the majority of people who take Fluconazole, this fungus is known as Candida. It is a common fungus that’s responsible for causing genital and oral thrush.

To kill the fungus, Fluconazole attacks the cell membranes and causes the contents to leak out. By slowing down the growth of the fungus, your body can then fight off the infection and recover from any damage caused.

What are the benefits?

Fluconazole is easy to take and treats thrush both quickly and effectively.

To treat thrush, you only need to take one singular dose. This is beneficial because:

  • you don’t have to remember to take more capsules throughout the day
  • you’re less likely to experience side effects
  • your gut microbiome is less likely to be affected

You are likely to feel your symptoms improving within 24 hours of taking your Fluconazole treatment.

Who can take Fluconazole?

Fluconazole is safe for most people who require treatment for thrush. However, you should not take this medication if:

  • you have liver or kidney problems
  • you suffer from heart problems including heart rhythm problems
  • you have unusual levels of magnesium, potassium or calcium in your blood
  • you or your partner have been exposed to a sexually transmitted infection

You should also avoid this medication if you are currently taking:

  • astemizole and terfenadine - antihistamines for treating allergies
  • cisapride - for treating stomach upsets
  • pimozide - antipsychotic medicine
  • quinidine - for treating heart arrhythmia
  • erythromycin - an antibiotic used for treating infections

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

This thrush treatment should be avoided during pregnancy as Fluconazole can cause birth complications. Traces of Fluconazole can be found in breast milk which could also pose a risk for newborns.

It is always advised that pregnant women or new mothers seek medical advice before taking any kind of medicine.

How do I take Fluconazole?

Always take prescription medicines as per your doctor’s instructions. However, a guide on taking Fluconazole for the treatment of thrush is written below.

  • you can take Fluconazole with or without a meal
  • the usual recommended dose is one 150 mg capsule
  • swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Do not break or chew the capsule

Contact your doctor if your symptoms have not improved within one week.
