Naratriptan (Naramig)

Naratriptan, sold under the brand name Naramig, is a treatment for migraines with or without aura.

It works by narrowing blood vessels in the brain and blocking nerve signals for pain in the brain.

How long does Naratriptan last?

Naratriptan may take 1-2 hours to work, but it reaches peak effectiveness after about 3 hours. This is why it’s particularly effective for long-lasting migraine attacks.

• regular exercise
• eating meals at regular times

It is also recommended that you keep a headache diary. This will help you track your symptoms and find what triggers them so you can avoid them.

Naratriptan (Naramig) is suitable for most adults with migraine symptoms. You should not use Naratriptan to prevent migraines from occurring.

Some people with certain medical conditions should not take it as it may increase the risk of side effects.

Do not take Naratriptan if you:

• are pregnant or breastfeeding
• are allergic to naratriptan
• have a heart problem (e.g. angina, coronary artery disease or heart failure)
• have had a heart attack, stroke or mini-stroke
• have circulation problems in your legs
• have high blood pressure
• have kidney or liver disease
• are under the age of 18

Cautions

Your doctor will also want to check your heart before using this medicine if you are more at risk of heart problems.

Risk factors include:

• heavy smoking or using nicotine replacement therapy
• being a man over the age of 40

How long do Naratriptan side effects last?

Naratriptan is a long-lasting medication. So, side effects may last for up to 12 or more hours after taking it. If you have persistent or worrying side effects, see your GP as soon as possible.

Naratriptan can interact with other medicines. Do not take Naratriptan if you take:

• other triptans
• ergotamine (for migraine treatment)
• antidepressants (e.g. citalopram, fluoxetine, bupropion or venlafaxine)
• St John’s Wort (a herbal remedy)
• tapentadol (for pain relief)

Always ask your doctor before starting Naratriptan if you take any other medicines.
