What is Naratriptan (Naramig)?

Naratriptan, sold under the brand name Naramig, is a treatment for migraines with or without aura.

It works by narrowing blood vessels in the brain and blocking nerve signals for pain in the brain.

It is particularly effective for moderate and long-lasting migraine attacks.

How does it work?

Naratriptan belongs to a class of migraine medications called ‘triptans’. These medicines work in two main ways to treat migraines.

It works by mimicking the brain chemical serotonin. It binds to the serotonin receptors in the brain. This causes the blood vessels in the brain to dilate, which reduces pain.

It also blocks nerve signals that cause pain in the brain during a migraine attack.

How do I take Naratriptan (Naramig)?

Naratriptan (Naramig) is available as a 2.5mg tablet.

Take one 2.5 mg tablet as soon as you feel a migraine coming on. It is most effective if you take it as soon as possible, but you can take it any time during a migraine attack.

  • take one 2.5 mg tablet as soon as you feel a migraine coming on
  • take another 2.5 mg tablet if your symptoms come back within 4 hours*
  • do not take another tablet if the first one doesn’t work
  • do not take more than 2 tablets within 24 hours

*If you have mild to moderate kidney or liver damage, do not take more than 1 tablet within 24 hours.

Taking too much Naratriptan may cause side effects. If you take more than the maximum dose, consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

How long does Naratriptan last?

Naratriptan may take 1-2 hours to work, but it reaches peak effectiveness after about 3 hours. This is why it’s particularly effective for long-lasting migraine attacks.

If Naratriptan does not work for a migraine attack, do not take another tablet. Talk to your doctor if it does not work for you.

What should I do while taking Naratriptan?

There are things you can do to help ease your migraine as well as the medication.

During a migraine attack, you should:

  • try sleeping or lying down in a dark room
  • avoid foods that you know trigger migraines
  • drink plenty of fluids, and avoid caffeine or alcohol

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the key to keeping migraines at bay. Eating well, exercising regularly, getting plenty of sleep and managing stress will all help reduce migraines.

Some factors may also help reduce your migraines, such as:

  • maintaining a healthy weight
  • getting plenty of sleep
  • managing your stress
  • regular exercise
  • eating meals at regular times

It is also recommended that you keep a headache diary. This will help you track your symptoms and find what triggers them so you can avoid them.

Who can take Naratriptan?

Naratriptan (Naramig) is suitable for most adults with migraine symptoms. You should not use Naratriptan to prevent migraines from occurring.

Some people with certain medical conditions should not take it as it may increase the risk of side effects.

Do not take Naratriptan if you:

  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • are allergic to naratriptan
  • have a heart problem (e.g. angina, coronary artery disease or heart failure)
  • have had a heart attack, stroke or mini-stroke
  • have circulation problems in your legs
  • have high blood pressure
  • have kidney or liver disease
  • are under the age of 18

Talk to your doctor if you are unsure whether this applies to you or have another health condition not mentioned.
