Naratriptan (Naramig)

Naratriptan, sold under the brand name Naramig, is a treatment for migraines with or without aura.

It works by narrowing blood vessels in the brain and blocking nerve signals for pain in the brain.

It is particularly effective for moderate and long-lasting migraine attacks.

Naratriptan belongs to a class of migraine medications called ‘triptans’. These medicines work in two main ways to treat migraines.

It works by mimicking the brain chemical serotonin. It binds to the serotonin receptors in the brain. This causes the blood vessels in the brain to dilate, which reduces pain.

It also blocks nerve signals that cause pain in the brain during a migraine attack.

Taking too much Naratriptan may cause side effects. If you take more than the maximum dose, consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

How long does Naratriptan last?

Naratriptan may take 1-2 hours to work, but it reaches peak effectiveness after about 3 hours. This is why it’s particularly effective for long-lasting migraine attacks.

If Naratriptan does not work for a migraine attack, do not take another tablet. Talk to your doctor if it does not work for you.

There are things you can do to help ease your migraine as well as the medication.

During a migraine attack, you should:

• try sleeping or lying down in a dark room
• avoid foods that you know trigger migraines
• drink plenty of fluids, and avoid caffeine or alcohol

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the key to keeping migraines at bay. Eating well, exercising regularly, getting plenty of sleep and managing stress will all help reduce migraines.

It is also recommended that you keep a headache diary. This will help you track your symptoms and find what triggers them so you can avoid them.

Naratriptan (Naramig) is suitable for most adults with migraine symptoms. You should not use Naratriptan to prevent migraines from occurring.

Some people with certain medical conditions should not take it as it may increase the risk of side effects.

Do not take Naratriptan if you:

• are pregnant or breastfeeding
• are allergic to naratriptan
• have a heart problem (e.g. angina, coronary artery disease or heart failure)
• have had a heart attack, stroke or mini-stroke
• have circulation problems in your legs
• have high blood pressure
• have kidney or liver disease
• are under the age of 18

Cautions

Your doctor will also want to check your heart before using this medicine if you are more at risk of heart problems.

Risk factors include:

• heavy smoking or using nicotine replacement therapy
• being a man over the age of 40
• being a woman who has been through menopause

Like all prescription medicines, Naratriptan can cause some side effects. However, the most common side effects are mild and go away without treatment.

Common side effects of Naratriptan include:

• dizziness
• drowsiness
• tiredness
• feeling hot
• feeling or being sick
• pins and needles

Rarely, Naratriptan can cause serious side effects. This can include:

• changes in your heart rate or an irregular heartbeat
• pain in the lower left side of the stomach with bloody diarrhoea
• an allergic reaction (swelling across the body, itching or wheezing)
• pressure, tightness or pain in the chest

Contact your doctor as soon as possible or seek urgent medical attention if your side effects don’t improve or get worse.

How long do Naratriptan side effects last?

Naratriptan is a long-lasting medication. So, side effects may last for up to 12 or more hours after taking it. If you have persistent or worrying side effects, see your GP as soon as possible.

Naratriptan can interact with other medicines. Do not take Naratriptan if you take:

• other triptans
• ergotamine (for migraine treatment)
• antidepressants (e.g. citalopram, fluoxetine, bupropion or venlafaxine)
• St John’s Wort (a herbal remedy)
• tapentadol (for pain relief)

Always ask your doctor before starting Naratriptan if you take any other medicines.

This medicine does not have any specific storage requirements. However, you should keep it out of sight and reach of children and do not use it past the expiry date.
