Betnovate is an effective treatment for inflammatory skin disorders and is commonly used to treat conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. As it is used to treat these skin conditions and reduce symptoms like itching, irritation, burning and swelling, it can also be used to alleviate and provide relief of symptoms associated with haemorrhoids (piles).
Betnovate is highly potent and therefore may be recommended as a haemorrhoids treatment if other medications have proved ineffective. It is available in cream, lotion or ointment form, allowing you to choose your preferred method.
Betnovate treatments contain the active ingredient betamethasone valerate (0.1%), a form of medication otherwise known as a topical corticosteroid. This ingredient works by reducing inflammation and alleviating symptoms that can occur with inflammatory conditions as swelling, soreness and itching. These are common symptoms, which also occur with haemorrhoids.
Skin inflammation happens as a result of irritation or allergy of the skin. It is caused by the release of numerous substances that serve an important function in the immune system. These substances trigger blood vessels to widen and eventually result in the irritated area becoming swollen, red, itchy and painful, such as is seen in eczema or dermatitis.
When this medication is applied to the skin, it works by acting inside the cells to lower the release of these inflammatory substances. This reduces uncomfortable redness, swelling and itching.
There are a wide range corticosteroid potencies available for skin application. Betnovate is usually prescribed to treat various skin disorders, such as dermatitis and eczema that have not responded very well to milder steroids.
Betnovate medications are classed as potent corticosteroids and therefore will only be prescribed with special care. It should not be used if you are allergic or have had an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients found in this medication or corticosteroid treatments. Betnovate is also unsuitable if you have kidney problems or liver problems or are suffering from skin conditions such as acne, rosacea in the same area where this treatment needs to be applied, a rash around the mouth, a fungal skin infection or a viral skin infection.
Betnovate is not suitable if you are pregnant, thinking about becoming pregnant or are breastfeeding.
If you are using or taking any other treatments, it is advisable that you speak to a doctor before taking Betnovate as they may interact with one another.
Before applying this treatment to the skin, you should wash your hands thoroughly while ensuring that the affected area is washed and dried. This treatment is for external use on the skin only. You can measure how much cream to apply with your fingertip. Unless you are applying the cream to your hands as part of the treatment, clean them again after using it.
Betnovate should be applied to the affected area thinly and evenly in small amounts. It is for short-term use only. Further information on how to take Betnovate is provided in the patient information leaflet.
As soon as your skin condition starts to become better, you should apply it less regularly, as directed by your GP or healthcare provider. If your GP or healthcare provider has advised you to use dressings with Betnovate, the skin should be cleaned before putting on the cream, lotion or ointment under a fresh dressing.
Do not apply your moisturisers to the same skin area at the same time as this treatment. Attempt to leave at least 30 minutes between putting on moisturisers. If you fail to follow these steps, the moisturiser may dilute the active ingredient and make it less effective.
As with all medications, there may be some side effects when using Betnovate. The possible side effects include, but are not limited to, skin irritation, itching and burning, skin colour changes, an increase in absorption and thinning of the skin if treatment is used for a long time, excessive hair growth, certain forms of dermatitis worsening of the affected area and eyesight problems like cataracts or glaucoma.
