Bricanyl Turbohaler is an inhaler which contains the active ingredient terbutaline. It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways of your lungs, making it easier to breathe.
Bricanyl is used for asthma treatment and other breathing problems where you have a tight chest and difficulty breathing, for example, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Bricanyl can also be taken orally in the form of a syrup or tablets. Here at euroClinix, we sell Bricanyl in the inhaler form.
The Bricanyl Turbohaler contains the active ingredient terbutaline sulphate. This belongs to a group of medicines called beta-agonists. These work by relaxing certain muscles and opening up the airways in the lungs.
Asthma causes the airway tubes to become more narrow and contract, which makes it more difficult for air to pass through. This makes it difficult to breathe and causes asthma symptoms such as shortness of breath, a cough, or wheezing.
The active ingredient terbutaline, does the following:
These effects help to open the airways, allowing air to flow more freely and making breathing easier.
Apart from effectively managing the symptoms of asthma, Bricanyl has many other benefits.
Benefits of the Bricanyl inhaler
The inhaler device allows the active ingredient to absorb directly into the lungs, providing quick action for asthma attacks.
An inhaler is portable and convenient which makes it easy to carry around and use anywhere.
The Turbohaler delivers a precise dose of medication, which reduces the risk of under-or over-medicating.
By delivering the medication directly to the lungs, it reduces its impact on other parts of the body. This minimises the risk of side effects compared to oral medications.
Using this medicine regularly can improve your overall lung function and quality of life.
Terbutaline’s effectiveness in relieving asthma symptoms has been demonstrated in clinical trials.
A study was conducted to compare the efficacy and acceptability of Terbutaline in 32 adult patients with asthma. The results showed that Terbutaline was effective in controlling the lung function in adults with mild to moderate asthma, and was preferred by 44% of patients.
Bricanyl is an effective option for many patients however, it may not be suitable for certain groups of people.
Bricanyl can be used by adults who need quick relief from breathing difficulties caused by asthma, or COPD.
You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to terbutaline, lactose, or any of the other ingredients found in this medicine.
You should speak to your doctor before using this medicine if you have:

This medicine should always be used as prescribed by a doctor. It is used during an asthma attack or when you have breathing difficulties. It can also be used before exercise or exposure to asthma triggers to prevent exercise-induced asthma or symptoms caused by allergens.
Bricanyl turbohaler is a dry powder inhaler with a 500mcg dose. It should only be taken when you are experiencing an asthma attack or to prevent symptoms before exercise.
In general, to relieve symptoms of asthma, take one inhalation as needed. Do not take more than four inhalations in a 24-hour period. Each dose provides relief for up to six hours.
Always use the inhaler as directed by your healthcare provider, and consult them if you find yourself needing it more frequently.
Each Turbohaler has a dose indicator window which tells you how many doses are left in the inhaler. A new inhaler will have 120 doses when it is full. The dose indicator is marked in intervals of 10 doses, so it doesn't show every dose.
A red mark at the edge of the indicator window indicates that there are approximately 20 doses left. When the background of the dose indicator is red, it means that you are left with your final 10 doses. This is handy to remind you to order a new inhaler.
Since Bricanyl is only taken when it is needed, you will not 'miss' any doses.
The effects of Bricanyl begin within 5 minutes after you have inhaled your dose and last for up to 6-7 hours.
The duration for using Bricanyl depends on your specific needs and your doctor's instructions. This medicine is used as a “reliever” for immediate symptom relief, rather than as a long-term daily treatment. Overusing your inhaler could lead to an increased risk of side effects.
If you notice that your usual dose of Bricanyl is not providing as much relief as before, or you are needing to use it more often, inform your doctor. This may indicate that your asthma is poorly controlled and your treatment will need to be reviewed.
