What is Lansoprazole?

Lansoprazole is a prescription treatment that reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

It provides symptomatic relief from a number of conditions, such as:

  • heartburn and indigestion
  • gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
  • stomach ulcers (prevention and treatment)
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

It can also be used in combination with antibiotics to treat bacterial infections caused by the bacteria Helicobacter pylori. This can cause stomach ulcers.

This medicine was approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in 2007.

Lansoprazole is available as tablets and capsules however, you can only purchase the gastro-resistant capsules online from euroClinix. These are available in 15mg and 30mg doses if you have previously been prescribed this treatment by your doctor.

How does Lansoprazole work?

Lansoprazole belongs to a class of medications called ‘proton pump inhibitors’ (PPI). Proton pumps are enzymes found in the lining of your stomach. They produce acid to digest the food you eat.

Lansoprazole works by blocking these proton pumps and preventing them from working properly. By doing this, less stomach acid is produced, which reduces the uncomfortable and painful symptoms of acid reflux, such as heartburn, regurgitation, and indigestion. As less acid is produced, it also promotes the healing of gastric and duodenal ulcers (ulcers in the small intestine), and prevents the formation of new ulcers.

Lansoprazole capsules are gastro-resistant. This means that they are made to resist the acidic environment in the stomach and dissolve only when they reach the intestines. This helps protect the medicine inside from being broken down by stomach acid too early, ensuring it works properly once it reaches the right part of your digestive system.

This medicine is also available as dissolvable tablets. These are solid tablets that are designed to dissolve in water or in the mouth before swallowing.

In patients taking NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), Lansoprazole protects the stomach lining and reduces the risk of NSAID-induced gastric ulcers.

Stomach protection Stomach protection

It protects the lining of the stomach by reducing the amount of acid produced. This can help prevent ulcers and promote healing in conditions like reflux oesophagitis.

Long-term management Long-term management

Who can and cannot take it?

Lansoprazole can be purchased online from euroClinix if you have a current prescription from your doctor.

Who can take this medicine?

Lansoprazole is recommended for adults experiencing any of the following:

  • Heartburn and acid reflux
  • Duodenal and stomach ulcers
  • Inflammation in the oesophagus (reflux oesophagitis)
  • Helicobacter pylori infections (when given together with antibiotics)
  • Treatment or prevention of duodenal or stomach ulcer in patients who use NSAIDs
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

Who cannot take this medicine?

Do not use this product if you are allergic to Lansoprazole or any of the other ingredients in this medication.

You should inform your doctor before using this medicine if you:

  • have serious liver disease
  • have had an allergic reaction (including an allergic skin reaction) to a different kind of proton pump inhibitor in the past
  • are due to have a Chromogranin A blood test
  • have vitamin B12 deficiency or have risk factors for low vitamin B12 levels

If you take this medicine for more than three months, your magnesium levels may fall. Symptoms of low magnesium include fatigue, muscle spasms, feeling disorientated, dizziness, and an increased heart rate. If you get any of these symptoms, you should seek immediate medical help.

Taking proton pump inhibitors like Lansoprazole, especially for more than one year, may slightly increase your risk of hip, wrist or spine fractures. Inform your doctor if you have osteoporosis or if you are taking corticosteroids.

For a complete list of precautions, read the patient information leaflet.

Dosage:

How long do I take it for?

The duration for taking Lansoprazole depends on the condition being treated. For short-term conditions, it is usually taken for up to 8 weeks. However, chronic conditions may require prolonged use under your doctor’s supervision. Your doctor will tell you how long your treatment will last.

How to take it

You should take this medication exactly as your doctor has directed. For the best results, we recommend the following:

  1. Take each dose on an empty stomach 30 minutes before food. This is because food can affect how much medication gets into your system.
  2. Make sure to swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew this medicine.
  3. If you have trouble swallowing, the contents of the capsules can be mixed with some water or fruit juice. It can also be sprinkled onto yogurt or apple puree before swallowing.

When to take it

If you are taking one dose per day, try to take it at the same time each day. It is best taken first thing in the morning.

If you are taking Lansoprazole twice a day, take the first dose in the morning and the second dose in the evening.

If your symptoms do not improve after your course, contact your doctor.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Do not take two doses at once to make up for a missed dose.

If you are taking Lansoprazole twice a day and miss one dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is within 4 hours of your next dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and take the next one at your usual time.

How long does Lansoprazole take to work?

Most people will feel better after 2 to 3 days of treatment. However, it can take up to four weeks to begin working. During this time, you may still experience some symptoms.

Symptom relief can vary depending on the dose of Lansoprazole you take and your overall health. For example, a 15mg dose is usually prescribed for milder cases, while a 30mg dose is taken for more severe conditions.

If your symptoms continue or get worse after the initial treatment, it could mean there is another underlying issue. If this happens, inform your doctor so they can review your condition and possibly change your treatment.

What lifestyle changes should I make while taking Lansoprazole?

There are certain lifestyle changes you can make to ensure you get the best results when taking this medicine.

Lifestyle guide for Lansoprazole

Avoid dietary triggers Avoid dietary triggers

Avoid foods that may trigger your symptoms such as spicy, fatty, or fried foods, citrus fruits, and chocolate. Drinks such as caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated beverages may also aggravate your condition.

Avoid tight-fitting clothes Avoid tight-fitting clothes

Wearing tight belts or clothing around the abdomen can increase pressure on your stomach and make you feel uncomfortable.

Maintain a healthy weight Maintain a healthy weight

If you are overweight, losing weight can reduce pressure on the stomach and lower the likelihood of reflux.

Don’t eat late Don’t eat late

Avoid eating late at night as this may trigger heartburn symptoms. Try to finish meals at least 2–3 hours before lying down.

Don’t eat large meals as these can increase stomach pressure, leading to acid reflux. When eating, use smaller plates and bowls. This will help you feel more satisfied while eating smaller amounts of food.
